Last week, Mayor Durkan extended the city’s pandemic rent reprieve to residential and small business tenants through the end of 2020. Currently, there is a statewide eviction moratorium through October 15th. This bans late fees, rent and deposit increases throughout Washington.
The additional extension is a result of the loss of $600 in extra weekly unemployment benefits from the federal government. Congress has not passed any replacement funds and a recent executive order has not been acted on.
While the Seattle City Council passed legislation in May that already gave residential tenants eviction relief through December, this new directive adds small businesses and nonprofits to the list of those covered. The moratorium on nonprofit and small business evictions applies to small businesses with less than 50 employees, state and 501(c)(3) nonprofits.
